Build Your Business

You Paid for the Cake, You Don’t Have to Eat It

Building a Business That Aligns With Your Life

For the past three weeks, I’d been doubling down on improving my health.
Daily walks. More water. A steady rhythm of high protein and low carb.

But this afternoon, sitting on the patio of a café, temptation showed up in the form of the most decadent slice of chocolate cake — delivered not to me, but to the table right beside mine.

The frosting was flawless, glossy in the sun. The layers looked rich, like something pulled straight out of a bakery ad. I could picture the first forkful, how it would melt on my tongue.

But when you actually cut into it. You take that bite. It’s not what you hoped for.
Too sweet. Too heavy. Not at all the flavor you imagined.

Yet… because it’s sitting there on your plate, because you already paid for it, you feel this strange obligation to finish it.

That’s when it hit me — this is exactly what happens in business.

You pour in time, money, and energy. On the outside, it looks beautiful. But living inside it? It’s too much. Too heavy. Not at all what you wanted. Here’s the truth: just because you paid for the cake, doesn’t mean you have to eat it.

The Business You THINK You Should Build

When I first stepped into the online space, I was looking for a playbook.
Everywhere I turned, successful entrepreneurs were saying the same thing: “You too can be successful — if you do exactly as I say.”

Every trend promised to be the one that would catapult my business into success.   Every scroll left me with the same thought: Maybe I should do that. Maybe I should try this.

Here’s the problem with building a business on “shoulds”:
It starts to feel heavy — like you’re carrying someone else’s dream on your back.

Instead of waking up excited, you wake up exhausted before the day even begins.
Instead of serving from a place of joy, you start serving from a place of resentment.

The truth is, “shoulds” are sneaky.
They push you to sign up for every platform, try every new tactic, chase every shiny object — not because it fits your vision, but because someone else said it was the only way. Here’s what I’ve learned: when you’re building from “should,” burnout is inevitable.
When you’re building from alignment, freedom follows.

The Cost of Eating Cake You Don’t Love

Here’s the thing about eating cake you don’t love: it doesn’t just sit heavy in your stomach — it weighs on your heart and mind too.

Instead of enjoying the moment, you’re already calculating how many extra miles you’ll have to walk to burn it off. The sweetness turns sour, and the guilt lingers long after the fork is down.

Business works the same way.

You start wondering where you’d be if you hadn’t fallen for the playbook of “You shoulds.”
How much lighter would your days feel if you weren’t dragging yourself through strategies and offers that no longer fit?
How much further along would you be if you’d built from alignment instead of obligation?

The cost of eating cake you don’t love — or building a business that doesn’t align — isn’t just wasted calories or wasted time. It’s the weight of carrying something that was never meant to nourish you in the first place.

Giving Yourself Permission to Push the Plate Away

There’s a quiet kind of freedom that champions in your heart when you realize you don’t have to keep eating something you don’t enjoy.

When clarity prevails, you see it for what it is: you’d rather throw away a $15 slice of cake than walk five miles trying to undo it.

You can stop — even if you already paid for it.

Business is no different.

So often, we stay bound to offers, projects, or strategies that feel heavy, simply because of how much we’ve already invested. All that time. All that money. All that energy. It feels wasteful to walk away.

Here’s the truth: the investment is already spent. Forcing yourself to keep “eating it” doesn’t get it back — it just multiplies the drain.

The freedom comes when you give yourself permission to say, “This no longer serves me.”
Not out of guilt. Not out of defeat. But out of wisdom.

This is the moment you move your experience off your plate and into your experience account — where it earns interest in the form of perspective, clarity, and discernment.

Because when you let go of what doesn’t align, you make room for what actually will. The wisdom gained is always more valuable than the cost of following through on something that was never aligned in the first place.

Choosing Ingredients That Actually Nourish You

The best cakes don’t just look good — they taste good because of the ingredients inside.
Your business works the same way.

YOUR business needs to be built with ingredients that carry your stamp of approval — the ones that are tried, true, and aligned with YOU.

Too often, we build backwards. We shape our lives around our business instead of shaping our business around the life we actually want. That’s why so many women feel trapped in something that was supposed to set them free.

The shift comes when you start asking different questions:

Does this light me up?
•Would I still do this if no one was watching?
•Does this fit into the life I’m designing, not just the business I’m building?

When you choose from that place, the ingredients you add actually nourish you. The work feels lighter, more joyful, more sustainable. Read more about that HERE in my post on why midlife is the perfect time to start a purpose-driven business.

This is where simplified systems matter. Because when the background is running smoothly — emails automated, calendars synced, client follow-ups handled — you finally have the space to choose the ingredients that bring you joy and bring into fruition a business you are proud to put your face, voice, and name on.

Instead of chasing every “should,” this is your chance to show up and shine in a way that highlights YOUR brilliance and YOUR dream.

Baking a Business That Feeds Your Soul

At the end of the day, a cake should leave you satisfied, not sick. Your business should do the same. It should feel nourishing, energizing, and aligned with who you are — not draining, guilt-inducing, or heavy.

This is where the magic happens: when your business is built from a place of authenticity. When the work almost effortlessly flows from your soul. When showing up feels natural, not forced.

Because alignment changes everything.

When your business reflects your truth, you no longer feel like you’re chasing strategies to prove yourself. Instead, you choose tools and systems that enhance your brilliance — not bury it under layers of overwhelm.

That’s when it happens — you create a business where your brilliance is magnetic to your ideal client. A business that you’re excited to share every day. A business that makes you look forward to the future because it feels like freedom, not pressure.

That’s how you bake something that truly feeds your soul.

You Paid for the Cake, But You Don’t Have to Eat It

At some point, every entrepreneur faces this truth: not everything you invest in will taste the way you imagined. Some cakes look decadent but leave you heavy. Some business ideas look perfect on paper but are actually draining in real life.

Here is the gift – you don’t have to finish what doesn’t nourish you. You get to choose to put the fork down, change the business strategy, realign and adjust.

Every decision, every investment, every “slice” you’ve tried still carries value – not as wasted effort, but as deposits in your experience account. That account gives you discernment. Wisdom compounds. It is the reason you will make better, clearer, more aligned choices moving forward.

When you use that wisdom to build from alignment, your business shifts. It becomes lighter. More authentic. More magnetic to the people you’re meant to serve. As Forbes points out, purpose-driven businesses don’t just survive – they win long-term.

That is the freedom of building a business that aligns with your life. One that doesn’t just look good on the outside, but truly nourishes you on the inside.
