Find Your Purpose

Rediscovering Your Identity:

How to Thrive After the Kids Leave Home

The Importance of Rediscovery

When your kids leave home, it’s not just their absence you feel—it’s the sudden question of, “Who am I now?” After years of dedicating yourself to raising them, managing a household, and perhaps even juggling a career, you might feel like a part of your identity walked out the door with them. I get it—there’s a profound emotional shift when the house gets quiet. But here’s the truth: this isn’t the end. It’s the beginning of a beautiful chapter, one where you get to rediscover you, even if it’s hard to see at the time.

Picture this:

It’s Spring 2020; our youngest and last child at home is completely disenchanted with life because “this” is her senior yearStack on that; soccer season was canceled, as was school, 18 hours before her first game.  The anxiety and stress she experienced as one activity after another was canceled; Prom, Senior Week, Senior Trip ~ all just gone.  Yet, I had the ability  to give her the one thing she thought would right all the wrongs in her world.  In giving her that it would pivot our relationship.  It would put me on a path I’ve seen coming but been avoiding.

Up the road from our family farm about 7 miles, sits a beautiful farm.  One with a house that my daughter and her husband worked hard to build.  On this same farm sits a one bedroom cabin we own.  It was a starting point for my daughter and her husband to live in while they built their dream home.  For my youngest, moving into the cabin would right all the wrongs in her world or at least set her actively on a path to independence.  She would be closer to her sister and have a new focus in life.

Just like that my baby moved out.  She was only 17.  Yes she had our blessing but a blessing doesn’t remove or negate the broken heart of a mom whose nest is empty too soon.

Let’s be honest

—after years of being in full-on “Mom Mode,” it’s easy to lose sight of who you are outside of that role. But midlife isn’t a dead end; it’s an invitation to reinvent yourself. Now, with the space and freedom to focus on what matters to you, it’s the perfect time to ask: What do I want for myself?

Countless women have embraced midlife as a second act, thriving in ways they never imagined. Oprah reinvented herself in her 50s, Vera Wang didn’t even start designing wedding dresses until she was 40. The point is: you have so much time left to create, explore, and thrive. It’s never too late to tap into your next passion or rediscover the dreams you set aside while life got in the way.

Practical Steps to Reconnect with Yourself

If you’re like most midlife moms, you might be wondering where to start. Here are a few simple yet powerful steps to get back in touch with who you really are:

  1. Reflect on Your Journey
Take a moment to journal about what made you feel alive before your role as a mother took center stage. What hobbies did you love but had to set aside? Were there career dreams, travel goals, or creative passions you buried under the demands of family life?
  2. Reconnect with Your Skills and Passions
You’ve gained more than just life experience during your parenting years—you’ve also honed powerful skills. Whether it’s your organizational prowess, problem-solving abilities, or communication skills, everything you’ve done is valuable. These skills can help reignite your sense of purpose.
  3. Journaling and Self-Reflection
Start writing—about your dreams, your goals, your identity. Reflection is a powerful tool to uncover those parts of yourself that you might have lost sight of. Use prompts like: What excites me? What part of myself do I want to nurture in this next phase? What can I do or create and still be readily available to my family?

Embracing New Opportunities

Once you’ve reconnected with who you are, it’s time to explore how you can take that passion and turn it into something tangible. This is your chance to step out of your comfort zone—whether that means diving into a new hobby, exploring new career paths, or even launching a business you’re passionate about.

You don’t have to go big right away. Start by dedicating a few hours each week to exploring something new. Test the waters with activities like yoga, painting, writing, or learning a new skill. It’s about the process of rediscovery, not rushing toward the finish line.

Taking risks in midlife can feel intimidating, but it’s also incredibly empowering. With age comes wisdom, and now you can take bold steps knowing you’re grounded in your experience and self-awareness.

Rediscovering your identity after the kids leave home isn’t about trying to recreate the past—it’s about honoring who you’ve always been while creating a new path forward. This phase of life can be one of adventure, growth, and deep satisfaction. So embrace it. You’ve spent years giving to your family, and now it’s time to give back to yourself.

Let’s make this next chapter your best one yet.
